San Jose del Cabo

San Jose del Cabo is decidedly less flashy than cape sister city Cabo San Lucas, and has traditionally been known for its lovely colonial style architecture and flourishing cultural scene. Originally founded in 1730 as a Jesuit mission, San Jose del Cabo charms today with its newly renovated central plaza, its historic Distrito del Arte–home to dozens of galleries and host of an extremely popular weekly Art Walk–and with its eclectic downtown mix of boutique shops and restaurants.

Much of San Jose del Cabo’s beauty, however, lies beyond the well-trod tourist paths. Like its sister city, San Jose offers miles of gorgeous golden sand beaches, from La Playita to the surfing meccas of Acapulquito and Costa Azul, the latter of which hosts the annual ATP sponsored Los Cabos Open of Surf.

The city’s most famed natural attraction, however, is its large freshwater estuary, which is separated from the Sea of Cortez by only a thin strip of sand, and doubles as a wildlife sanctuary and locus of activity for destination birdwatchers.

Those seeking to settle down, or at least to consider a vacation home in San Jose, will find an intoxicating array of options, headlined by Puerto Los Cabos, an ambitious development located just outside the city. Puerto Los Cabos not only offers luxurious residences, but resort-based lifestyle amenities like championship-level golf courses from legendary champions Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman, and a large marina capable of accommodating everything from fishing boats to mega-yachts.
